Subject Matter Expert Support for FAA UAS Simulator Workstation
The UND research team proposes to provide Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) pilot/flight crew subject matter experts (SME) to support ongoing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) research efforts focused on the safe integration of UAS in the National Airspace System (NAS). In June 2009, the FAA signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI). As part of the agreement, GA-ASI has supplied the FAA with an MQ-9 Predator B hardware-in-the-loop simulator (HILSIM), “Simulator Workstation UER 85961-1”. This simulator will be used to support a series of research endeavors that will address UAS integration issues and conduct system safety research initiatives in support of developing a safety case for UAS. The research also requires the input and participation of UAS pilot SMEs to develop, test, and exercise multiple operational scenarios for the use in several human-in-the-loop (HITL) simulations planned over the next two years.
